NCE Questions by Content Areas

Awareness of the NCE exam's number of questions asked per topic can be helpful in determining how best to study and prepare. The number of questions by five counselor work behavior categories can currently be broken out as follows:

  • Assessment and career counseling, 22 questions
  • Fundamentals of counseling, 64 questions
  • Group counseling, 19 questions
  • Professional practice issues, 29 questions
  • Programmatic and clinical interventions, 26 questions

Based on the 13 core areas of the NCE examination, the number of questions (200 total) asked can be broken out as follows:

  • Appraisal and assessment techniques, 20 graded questions and 5 ungraded questions
  • Career and lifestyle development, 20 graded questions and 5 ungraded questions
  • Group work (group dynamics, techniques and theories), 16 graded questions and 4 ungraded questions
  • Helping relationships (counseling theories, methods and techniques, consultation, and family therapy), 36 graded questions and 10 ungraded questions
  • Human growth and development (normal growth and development and abnormal human behavior), 12 graded questions and 2 ungraded questions
  • Professional orientation and ethics (including referral, triage and advocacy, and supervision), 29 graded questions and 7 ungraded questions
  • Research and program evaluation (research methods and statistics), 16 graded questions and 4 ungraded questions
  • Social and cultural foundations, 11 graded questions and 3 ungraded questions

Test takers will not know which questions are graded. The number of questions asked per area can change in future test administrations, so the overview should be considered an approximation.
