Overcoming Text Anxiety

Even highly accomplished individuals who have taken countless examinations can still develop a case of the nerves when taking tests. To ward off any test-day jitters, consider the following:

Getting Ready

  • Eat a healthy breakfast so you don't become distracted by hunger or need an energy pick-me-up during the test. Avoid meals that are high in sugar but low in substance, and drink your normal amount of caffeine (in other words, don't overdo it!).
  • Dress for comfort. Consider wearing socks (for temperature control) and loose, comfortable shoes and bring a jacket in case the examination room is cool.

What to Bring

  • Your registration forms will specify what you should bring into the exam room.
  • Wear a watch so you can keep track of time and pace yourself properly.
  • Bring change for vending machines, in case that is an option.

What NOT to Bring

  • Leave your cell phone at home or in the car.
  • Leave any self-protection devices, bulky bags, or study aids at home or in the car.

Mental Preparation

By now, you have most likely developed a test-day ritual you have found that works best for you. Also consider:

  • Take slow, deep, calming breaths prior to entering the exam room and again once seated.
  • Do a mental checklist of key areas you've studied.
  • Relax and stay loose. If you have extra time in your seat, perform some quick and simple relaxation exercises such as rolling your shoulders back and forward or slowly rolling your head.
  • Believe in yourself!
