Special Education Degree
A special education degree prepares professionals to work with students who have special needs. These students might have physical, mental or psychological disabilities and require extra attention to be certain that an adequate education is achieved. A job in the field of special education can require working in almost any academic or life skill field, so professionals will need a varied background. Also, because students' situations can differ so drastically, special education professionals need to be prepared to work in multiple settings.
Most of the special education degree programs exist at the master's level, though there are a few undergraduate programs with that particular specialization. Having a master's in special education is highly recommended for going into the field. Many states require that professionals have a master's degree in special education before they can get certified. When compared with general education teachers, those going into the special education field tend to need more schooling and more hours of teaching in order to gain certification.
Professionals might also choose to pursue a doctorate special education degree. This type of degree is highly recommended if they are looking to move into more administrative roles in special education programs, or to pursue academic research. This direction could lead to a position where professionals help shape special education policies at a high level.
There are several avenues available to professionals with a special education degree. Most positions tend to focus on educating young children with disabilities, which will typically take place in a private or public school setting. Positions are also available in juvenile correctional facilities, hospitals, mental health facilities and private learning centers. Beyond teaching academic subjects, professionals teach practical, real world skills such as buying groceries, keeping a financial budget and general housekeeping tasks. It takes a special kind of person to be able to meet the physical and mental needs of the disabled, but a career in special education can be very rewarding.
