The National Counselor Examination consists of 200 multiple-choice questions. Candidates have 4 hours to complete the exam, which is typically scheduled for a start time of 9 a.m. Test takers are given a test booklet, and answers are recorded using a separate machine-scorable answer sheet.
Examination administration sites are selected to be accessible to candidates with physical disabilities. However, for individuals requiring special assistance from others (i.e., a reader or recorder), permission from the NBCC must be requested in writing at the time of the application for the admittance of an assistant individual.
If a candidate cannot participate in the examination on a Saturday due to religious reasons, the individual should send a written request along with the application for a special administration of the NCE on the Friday immediately preceding or the Monday immediately following the scheduled administration date.
In addition, if it is necessary to request additional time to take the test beyond the 4 hours allotted due to special needs or because of limited English proficiency, the request for extended time must also be submitted in writing along with a candidate’s application.
A different version of the NCE is compiled for each exam administration. Questions are pulled from the NCE test question pool, which has undergone extensive review and testing in the field. The NCE exam and associated answer sheet are copyrighted, and any distribution of content or materials either orally or written is prohibited. In addition, disclosure of examination content to others is considered a violation of the NBCC Code of Ethics.
