NCE Questions by Content Areas

Awareness of the NCE exam’s number of questions asked per topic can be helpful in determining how best to study and prepare. The number of questions by five counselor work behavior categories can currently be broken out as follows:

Assessment and career counseling, 22 questions
Fundamentals of counseling, 64 questions
Group counseling, 19 questions
Professional practice issues, 29 questions
Programmatic and clinical interventions, 26 questions

Based on the 13 core areas of the NCE examination, the number of questions (200 total) asked can be broken out as follows:

Appraisal and assessment techniques, 20 graded questions and 5 ungraded questions
Career and lifestyle development, 20 graded questions and 5 ungraded questions
Group work (group dynamics, techniques and theories), 16 graded questions and 4 ungraded questions
